mdl:tso, a project by lusaka born, paris based daniel phiri. a musical explorer, blending breaks, techno, bass and the occasional hip-hop edits. his sound is heavily techno leaning. traveling from minimal to dub to ambient and back. with a self confessed bias for sounds from the global south.

not a lot of text for a newsletter but hey, i’ve been hosting a radio show for about two years on oroko radio. i’ve made radio show episodes for myself before. you can find them on my mixcloud and soundcloud.

sharing my mixes is a great way to track my progress and sonic evolution. for quite sometime it mostly served a very personal goal. i decided to take it step higher and mix for an audience and through the counsel of a certain she spells doom i discovered oroko radio.

it was perfect because having an external party expect a musical delivery from me every few helped keep my output consistent. work and life were a lot but doing this really kept me going!

i thought i’d take you through that journey.

march 2024

i went south in this one, a lot of my selection happened in a cold and gloomy place - with space to groove, i made a lot of discoveries; new artists, new connections, i hope this makes you feel something. i love the space and textures in this. groovy, dark, ambient dance music.

may 2024

sending love to everyone around the world, it's such a weird moment in time. between conflict and climate change, it feels like there aren't that many reasons to dance and commune with each other. battling a seemingly endless winter, i'm mesmerised by these artists. the production and emotion blew me away, so much to say, so much to hear, so much to appreciate. i explore a lot of harsh, jarring and piercing sounds and juxtapose them with calm pensive serene scapes sprinkled with a bit of melody; it's a mix close to my heart. i hope you enjoy this edition of going south.

its cold(er) and my body is protesting the sun disappearing, so i wanna dance in protest. i miss groovy techno, i miss weird glitchy tracks, so i brought them back and it made my body smile... i hope it does the same for you. boogieboogie lives

hello there, i'm super excited to introduce to you my first guest SOY. SOYs purpose is to keep people on the dancefloor for this emerging winter. the atmosphere created is discreet, sometimes dark and organic, with some forms of mystery, engaging people to let go and enjoy the seductive rhythms. SOY is a paris based dj, who find inspiration in plenty of music genres. she likes to start her mixes with some dancehall or afrobeats tracks, then exploring electronic and techno sounds, to finally finish in high energy with jungle or dnb.she is grateful to have her togolese & french heritages, which influenced multiplied her musical influences. she invented a world to describe her mixes style, the « twerkno », a perfect balance between twerk and techno sounds!

i've felt the need to let some creative feelings and musings out, sometimes music has a way of sharing, without my words, what i feel, where my mind is, and this is what this mix is for me, we go to so many places, hopefully feel so many things. i've been thinking about expression, and doing things to get a feel of what my flavour of this is. i remembered that a radio show can be anything i want it to be, communicating what i set out to do, i'm not restricted to 135bpm or a single genre. and today i had lot to say, about myself, the world i live in, the state of it, my role in everything, musics promise of community, my role in that, your role in listening... i hope you enjoy!

coucou, excited to share this guest mix by ezri jade, who i met in croatia this year. she delivered a surreal set with insane dynamism and i knew i had to have her on going south. she's described this mix as familiar/almost sentimental and simultaneously futuristic. the mix might move slowly but the tracks are fluid and sharp, lots of caribbean/south american tunes. i hope you enjoy as much as i did. ezri jade is a guyanese-dutch multidisciplinary creative. her dj sets reflect the third space; from electronic riddims to alternative club and hidden gems from the global underground.

its really heartwarming to look back and listen to these.. i’ve been on a bit of a haitus.. but i had a lovely live set last weekend (thanks to everyone who came ♥) that was nice.. what’s going on? really, i think i have too much music, at least digital tracks which makes picking and organising overwhelming, i think i understand why some artists start afresh with collections every couple of years.. i think i might do that! i hope it helps

i’m also always in a weird space, i need to bring it back to the basics… i haven’t made a mix in a while and my plants are dying but i’m fine, i’m filling another cup i guess

what’s next? i’m learning how to dj on vinyl (it’s hard and cumbersome) – but i like how i can disconnect! just me and my analog machines.

i can promise you this.. more mixes come.. hopefully a vinyl one soon. let’s see, what else?

i moved from spotify to apple music, despite a migration path, there have been some hiccups… habit is a thing!
